East Hampton NY Old Hook Mill

In 1806, Nathaniel Dominy V and his apprentices crafted the Hook Windmill, a replacement for an earlier “spider-legged” windmill that dated back to around 1740 at the same site. A skilled local artisan, Dominy V was also responsible for constructing windmills on Gardiner Island in 1795 and Shelter Island in 1810. The Hook Windmill is notable for incorporating elements from its predecessor, including a massive 24-inch square center post, the largest of its kind among Long Island’s remaining windmills. This post features mortises that were originally part of the earlier post mill’s structure.

Over the years, Dominy V diligently maintained the Hook Windmill, undertaking significant repairs such as replacing the windshaft in 1816, 1825, and 1830. These restorations also included updates to sails, points, cogs, rounds, and bearings, ensuring the mill’s continued operation.

From 1859 to 1908, Nathaniel Dominy VII and his sons managed the windmill. During this period, the Hook Windmill processed about 5,000 bushels of grain into flour and feed annually, a modest amount compared to the 25,000 bushels ground by the more modern, steam-powered grist mill established in Southampton in 1851. The Hook Windmill was also fitted with a corn cob crusher and an elevator, which transported grain from the first to the third floor for milling.

In 1939, Charles Dominy, son of Nathaniel Dominy VII, restored the windmill to working condition for the village and operated it until 1942. Afterwards, Maurice Lester managed the windmill until the 1950s.

Today, the Hook Windmill stands as a museum, opening its doors to visitors during the summer months, offering a glimpse into the history of wind-powered grain milling.
